V.O.Chidambam Pillai was the famous freedom fighter in our Indian history known as Kappalottiya Tamilan. He was born on September 5th 1872 in Ottappidaram. His parents Ulaganathan Pillai and Ramayi Ammal. He studied his school life at Tuticorin. Then he studied law at Tiruchirappalli. After his studies he met Bharathiar at Chennai and became friendship with him and shared his political idealogy. Chidambaram entered politics at 1905 and became joining Indian National Congress. He had guidence with famous leaders such as Bal Ganghadar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai and Subramanya Siva. Involvement in politics made him as a Swadeshi movement,
V.O.Chidambaram made his contribution to our nation by involve the shipping service. He started an Indian owned-shipping service company at Tuticorin on October 1906. He registered Swadeshi Shipping Company.In the begining the company owned no ships.In response Chidambaram released a single freighter from Srilanka. Realizing the need for the swadeshi shipping company to own its own vessels. Chidambaram travelled around India to improve shipping company. He managed to secure sufficient funds to purchase the companys first ship. The ship name is S.S.Lovo-from France. The ships commenced regular service between Tuticorin and Columbo[Srilanka] in the year 1907.
Prison moments of V.O.C-
For the support of Bipin Chandrapal and Subramanya Siva he had keen interest in political actions. Chidambaram and Subramanya Siva arrested by Britishers on 12 March 1908. The arrest was followed by wide spread. Schools and colleges closed. Chidambaram refused to leave the jail without the release of Subramanya Siva. He was confined in the Central Prison ,Coimbatore from 9 July 1908 to 1 December 1910. Chidambaram was interned in Coimbatore and Kannanoor jail. In Coimbatore jail he treated as like bull. He was also known as Chekkilutha Semmal. After he released 12th December 1912. In 1915 he met Gandhi at Chennai. After he died on 18,November 1936.

He was known as Tamil Helmsman.It means Kappalottiya Tamilan.
After independence Tuticorin port is named as V.O.C.port.
On September 5,1972 Indian postal department revealed stamp of Chidambaram for his memory..
In Coimbatore V.O.C.Park is situated for his memory.
A memory statue is constructed at Central Jail Coimbatore.
