Maruthu brothers are earliest freedom fighters against Britishers in our Indian history. Maruthu brothers born in Mukkulam village in Virudhunagar district. Older brother Periya Maruthu born on 15 December 1748 and elder brother Chinna Maruthu born on 1753. The parents of Maruthu brothers are Udhayam Servai and Ponnathal. Maruthu brothers joined as soldiers in the army of Muthuvaduganathar-king of Sivagangai. These two brothers had more skills in army training. After the attack of Ramanathapuram, Arcot Nawab and Britishers were making his attack to Kalayaarkoil. In this attack Muthuvaduganathar killed. Wife of Muthuvaduganathar, Velu Nachiyar and Maruthu Pandiyar escaped from Kalayaarkoil and lived Virupachi near Didigul. 
On 1779 Velu Nachiyar and Maruthu brothers defeated Britishers and 1980 Velu Nachiyar became the ruler of Sivagangai. In this war Velu Nachiyar at Melur and Maruthu brothers at Manalur and Hyder Ali at Dindigul were defeated the enemies. Maruthu brothers were trained in native martial arts of Surankottai. They were good at aerodynamics and craftsmanship. The Maruthu brothers were good association with Veerapandiya Kattabomman. After the death of Kattabomman in 17th October 1799 Chinna Maruthu gave asylum to Kattabommans brother Omaidurai. But the British took this reason to invade and attacked Sivagangai in 1801 with a powerful army. The allies were quit successful and captured three districts from the British. 
After that Britishers made additional troops and made war against this alliance. Finally Britishers won and Maruthu brothers escaped. After this incident they regrouped and fought the British at Virupachi,Dindigul and Cholapuram. While they won the battle of Virupachi they lost other battles Dindigul and Cholapuram. After the death of Velu Nachiyar, Maruthu brothers ruled Sivagangai. But later Britishers arrested Maruthu Pandiyar and killed at Thiruppathur fort on 24 October 1801. Maruthu brothers sacrifice life is inspiration to all people. The statue of Maruthu brothers situated at Kalayaarkoil. Indian government released a postal stamp of Maruthu brothers on 23rd October 2004.
