Dheeran Chinnamalai was also a freedom fighter in our Indian history against British government. He met many wars in his life against Britishers. Dheeran Chinnamalai was born in Melapalayam on 17 April 1756-Erode district. His real name was Theerthagiri Gounder,also called Theerthagiri Sarkkarai. In his early life he took training in horse riding,archery and more. His parents Rathinasamy Gounder and Periyatha. He gathered youth and built an army for his kongu region. At that time kongu region was ruled by Mysore kingdom. So the collecting of tax amounts are sent to Mysore by the way of Sankagiri. One day Dheeran Chinnamalai captured the tax amount and gave it to all poor people. This incident was an important incident in his life because this is the incident to have a friendship with Mysore king Tipu Sultan. 


After the death of Hyder Ali on 7th December 1782 his son Tipu Sultan became the king of Mysore and had a good friendship with Dheeran Chinnamalai. This alliance had defeated the war against Britishers at Sitheswaram,Malavalli and Srirangapatnam. At these three Mysore wars British met only loss. For the loss of three Mysore wars Britishers had hungry with Tipu Sultan and his alliance partner Dheeran Chinnamalai. At fourth Mysore war unfortunately Tipu Sultan was killed by Britishers near Srirangapatnam. This is sad moment for Dheeran Chinnamalai. After the death of Tipu Sultan Dheeran Chinnamalai stayed at Odanilai and gave tough training for his youth army. 
Then 1799 he had friendship with Thundajivak and Appachi with his army. He gathered all Palayakkaras and had friendship with them. On 3rd June 1800 he wish to destroy the Kovai fort . But Kovai revolution failed. And then he won Karnal Maxwell at Bhavani. Also he had another victory against Karnal Haris at Arachalur on 1803. Britishers had great hungry with Chinnamalai. They had a secret way to close Chinnamalai. They had a secret friendship with cooking master Nallappan of Chinnamalai. The secret spy Nallappan gave all information about Chinnamalai. So Britishers arrested Chinnamalai very easy. On 31st July 1805 the Britishers killed Dheeran Chinnamalai at Sankagiri fort. He died but his courage never died. For the memory of Dheeran Chinnamalai a statue is at Chennai. Also memorial building at Odanilai. On 31st July 2005 Indian postal department released a postal stamp of Dheeran Chinnamalai.
