Rani Chennamma can be definitely called as the first female freedom fighter of India. Rani Chennamma was the Rani of Kittur a former princely state in Karnataka. She led an armed rebellion against British East Indian company. One of the first female ruler to rebel against British rule she has became a folk hero in Karnataka and symbol of the independent movement in India. Rani Chennamma was born on 23 October 1778 in Kakati a small village in Karnataka. She belonged to lingayat community. Received training in horse riding,sword fighting and archery from young age. She married Raja Mallasaraja at the age of 15. Rani Chennamma had to fight destiny even before her fight against British since her husband died in 1816 leaving her with her only son. 

Struck by the sudden risk Chennamma was clear to continue the ruling position of her kingdom. She had to adopt Sivalingappa as the heir to the throne due to her sons death. At that time British East Indian company should involve the Kittur kingdom for their ruling system. Collector Thakkarey demand Rani to obey the rules of Britishers. Also pay the taxes to government. But Rani refused all demands of Britishers. She was confidant of her freedom and her kingdom. Britishers had hungry and took a decision for battle. Chennamma know about this situation and took alert of her army. Britishers arranged two tanks in front of the Kittur fort and ready to kill the enemies. 
But Rani captured the two tanks for her human sense and attack with that tanks to her enemies brilliantly.For this incident Britishers had more hungry and arrange another two tanks and fought with Rani.. At first she had some success. Britishers army forces was about 20000 troops and guns about 400 in total. But Rani Chennamma fought against the troops with vigorously. In this battle collector Thakkarey killed. Also the two British officers Sir Walter Elliot and Stevension were also killed. Rani Chennamma fought fiercely for continuously 12 days but lastly she was captured and imprisoned at Bailhongal fort. Every one of us know her sacrifice and braveness.
