Babu Kunwar Singh was royal rebellion in our Indian history against Britishers. First war of independence in 1857 Babu Kunwar Singh actually led a select band of armed soldiers against troops under the command of British East India Company. He was the first organizer of the fight against the British in Bihar. Babu Kunwar Singh was born on November 1777 in Jagdispur -Bihar. His parents Maharaja Shahabzada Singh and Maharani Pancharatnam Devi. He belonged to the Ujjainia Rajput clan. He married the daughter of Raja Fateh Narein Singh. Kunwar Singh led the Indian rebellion of 1857 in Bihar. He was nearly eighty and in falling health when he was called upon to take up arms. He gave a good fight and harried British forces for nearly one year. He was an expert in the art of guerrilla warfare. His tactics left the British buzzled Singh assuned command of the soldiers who had revolted at Danapur on 25 July.
Two days later he occupied Arrah the district head quarters. Major Vincent Eyre relived the town defeated Singh forces and destroyed Jagdispur. During the rebellion his army had to cross the Ganges river. Douglus army began to shoot at their boat. He drew his sword and cut off his left hand. Singh left his ancestral village and reached Lucknow in December 1857. In March 1858 he occupied Azamgarh. He came towards his home in Ara Bihar. Singh had victory near Jagdispur. In his last battle fought on 23 April near Jagdispur the troops under the control of the East Indian company were completely routed.
On 22 and 23 April being injured he bought bravely against British army and with the help of his army he drew away British army and hoisted his flag in Jagdispur. He returned to his place on 23 April 1858 and soon died. To honor his memory and his contribution to Indias freedom the Indian government issued a stamp on 23 April 1966. Name after him government of Bihar established Veer Kunwar Singh University in Arrah-1992.
