Begum Hazrat Mahal was a great Indian freedom fighter who played a major role during Indias first war of Independence. Behind Begum Hazrat Mahals graceful nature and physical charm lay the qualities of a strong leader and an adroit strategist which were strongly witnessed through her contributions to Indias first struggle for independence against the British. She was born in 1820-Faizabade- Awadh. She was wife of Nawab Wazid Ali Shah. She was also known as Begum of Awadh. When her husband was exiled to Calcutta she took responsibility of managing the affairs of the state of Awadh and seized control of Lucknow.
During the first war of Indias independence that took place in 1857 -58 Begum Hazrat Mahal leaded a team of people who supported her in the revolt against the Britishers. She succeeded capturing and gaining control over the state of Lucknow. She made her son Birjis Qadr the king of Awadh. She worked together with other eminent leaders of those times like Nana Saheb. After a long seize Lucknow was again captured by British forcing. Hazrat Mahal to retreat in 1858. She spent the remaining life in Nepal. Karl Marx quates-Hazrat Mahal,Begum of Oudh during the national liberation uprising of 1857-1859 in India headed the rebels.
Begum Hazrat Mahal of Oudh was last of the breed of able queens and generals. The queen led her kingdoms army into battle during the revolt of 1857. Even after she was defeated she defied Queen Victorias famous proclamation and issued a counter proclamation. First of Independence held in Uttar Pradesh becoming a lost hero in the pages in Indian history. Government of India issued a commemorative stamp in the honor of Hazrat Mahal on 10th May 1984. She was died in 1874 in Kathmandu. But her bravery never died. All Indians proud of her courage and sacrifice.
