Jhalkari Bai
Jhalkari Bai was a legendary dalit woman warrior who played a crucial role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 during the battle of Jhansi in the womans army of queen Rani Lakshmibai. She was born in dalit family and grew up to became a soldier and also Lakshmibais adviser.Jhalkari Bai was born on 22nd November 1830 in Bhojla village. Her father Sadoba Singh and mother Jamuna Devi. At very young age she trained to use weapons, ride a horse and fight like a warrior. The revolt of 1857 figurs in a major way in the narratives of popular dalit histories and the life of Jhalkari Bai as well. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 has been in many ways held as the first challenging revolt against the British rule in India. She married Puran Singh a soldier from the artillery unit of Rani Lakshmibais army.
In the queen Rani Lakshmibais army she quickly rose in the ranks and bagan commanding her own army. During the Rebellion of 1857 General Huse Rose attacked Jhansi with large army. The queen valiantly faced the army with 4000 of her troops in her fort. She waited for relief from Peshwa Nan Sahibs army camping at Kalpi that did not come because Tatia Tope had already been defeated by General Rose. Meanwhile Dulha Ju in charge of one of the gates of the fort had made a fact with English and open the doors of Jhansi for the British forces. When the British rushed the fort Lakshmibai on advice of her courtier escaped through another gate amidst the chaos of heavy fighting and casualities.
Upon hearing of Lakshmibais escape, as Lakshmibai told Jhalkari Bai set out for General Roses camp in discus and declared herself to be the queen. This led to a confusion that continued for a whole day and gave the Ranis army renewed advantage. While this act of sacrifice and courage is what she is most well known for another little acknowledged fact remains that she was a close confidant and advisor to the queen playing a key role she played in the analysis and strategizing of the battle itself alongside Rani Lakshmibai. Later she died on 1858 in Gwalior.
The first biography of Jhalkari Bai was written by Bhawani Shankar Visharad . President Ramnath Govind unvieled the statue of Jhalkari Bai at Guru Tech Bahadur complex in Bhopal on 10th November 2017. Jhalkari Bai fought as Lakshmi Bai is a thrilling revolution in our Indian history. In south Kuyili was the lady commander of Rani Velu Nachiar such like that Jhalkari Bai was the lady commander of Jhansi Rani Lakshmibai. Salute to Jhalkari Bai for her freedom fighting.
